Sherwin-Williams Protects Bergen Airport - 13/03/2015

A new terminal being built at a major Norwegian airport will be protected from extreme temperatures by a specialist system supplied by Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings.

The project consists of 4,000 tons of steel structures, and once complete will double the capacity of the airport, the second busiest in Norway.

Sherwin-Williams has been appointed by contractor Ruukki Construction, and will provide both fire protection coatings and anti-corrosion protection, covering a total of 30,000 sq metres.

The company’s EPIGRIP C400V3 zinc phosphate primer, FIRETEX FX2000 intumescent coating and RESISTEX C237 sheen finish will be supplied until June.

Anthony Ward, European business manager at Sherwin-Williams, said: “The project at Bergen Airport is significant and requires specialist coatings which ensure the steel structure is protected from both extreme temperatures and corrosion.

"The system we specified is designed to provide fire resistance for up to 60 minutes on structural steel, is a highly effective solution."

Operated by state-owned Avinor, Bergen Airport’s expansion will provide capacity for up to 7.5 million extra passengers each year.

The project also incorporates modification of the existing terminal and new infrastructure work including a new light rail station.
